One of the most agreeable introductions to the subject matter I've ever read. All contributions are of a rare literary quality and elegance.
Striking is the fact that the authors are essentially using - largely published - literary works (18th century theatre, novels, poetry - and the books of the Goncourt brothers) as sources and practically never archival material - as would be done by contemporary historians.
"Political correctness" is generally sacrificed to wit (or should I say "esprit"?) But most authors (all male) are supporting feminism (the feminism of the 1920s!). There is a chapter on the education of girls, not of boys...… (mais)
