Barry Henkin

“Why am I so special?” can be interpreted in more than one way: The person may think he or she is different from other people and wonders why. He or she may be saying the reverse, that he or she is just like everyone else and considering oneself to be special is pretentious. In the case of Barry Henkin, both meanings are accurate.
WHY AM I SO SPECIAL? is a brief autobiography that tells about the life of Barry Henkin, complete with pictures, newspaper articles, and letters from friends.
Born in 1961 to a middle-aged mother who was unable to care for him, he was placed in a home with the intention of the parents adopting him. Before he was a year old, the parents’ concerns about his physical and development deficiencies led to the termination of that adoption. Luckily for Barry, he was placed into a loving, supportive foster home. Those parents encouraged him and led him to realize that he had a special gift of working with people. He reached out to his biological family and has been able to have relationships with some of them.
Another reason Barry is so special is that he makes other people feel special. A few months after he finished high school 1980, Barry got a job at a nursing home in Beachwood, Ohio. He still works there as a transporter in the rehabilitation unit. If he met you when he started his job in 1981, he will greet you by name and ask you about your family, remembering the members that you talked about then. He also remembers your birthday. And he is really into popular music of the decades from the sixties on.
He’s received awards from his workplace as well as a gold medal in bowling in the Special Olympics and is a member of the Cleveland Heights High School Hall of Fame.
He also is a motivational speaker, telling people about his experiences and giving them advice about how they can be successful in achieving their goals.
He has two big dreams at this time: Meeting Reba McEntire and appearing on Ellen. After reading his book, I hope both of them become reality.
