Trip to the Moon, by Barbara Hehner, is a non-fiction narrative that recounts the true story of the Apollo mission that first landed on the moon through the eyes of Jan, daughter of Buzz Aldrin. In addition to describing the astronauts' journey, Jan also tells the reader of her experiences on the homefront, watching her father in his heroic journey. Also, this book is full of diagrams and distances (in kilometers and miles) describing outer space and the technology used, giving the reader access to scientific data in a non-threatening way. Outstanding Read!… (mais)

The Spirit of Canada is an anthology of over 100 stories, legends, poems, and songs by famous, lesser-known, and unknown Canadian writers. The book is illustrated by 15 well known Canadian illustrators. It is divided into parts based on Canada's timeline, culture and past-times. The different parts begin with a historical or descriptive note. The stories, legends, poems, and songs are preceded with facts about the subject, author and/or illustrator of the piece. There are selections about diverse subjects such as Aboriginal creation and culture, exploration of Canada, the Northwest Passage, the Underground Railroad, logging, life in the North, immigrants, emigration, and, of course, hockey.

The Spirit of Canada is a great and entertaining way for people to learn some of the history and culture of Canada. It is nice to read folklore that is Canadian in origin or has a Canadian twist. The layout of the book adds to the enjoyment, intermingling stories, legends, songs, and poems. Adding facts before each piece adds to the value of the selection. For instance, there are some people, who study folklore, who believe Paul Bunyan originated in Canada. The illustrations are in many styles and techniques. This book can be enjoyed by children and adult alike.

The Spirit of Canada has won Mr. Christie's Book Award and IODE award.
