Pequena biografia
I live in California's Mojave Desert with my best friend and husband, nine children, two grandchildren, and a dog. When I'm not living in the real world, doing exciting things like scrubbing floors, toilets, and explaining photosynthesis-- again, I escape into Word and write about my imaginary friends, as they live lives that are both very similar and completely different from mine.

The book has a mystery with romance mixed in to deliver a fun story. Kensi is a good character with a problem. Seems like someone is after her and wants to make sure she doesn’t talk. Who is after her and what do they think she knows or has? It was nice to be back at the beautiful tropical island where beauty is everywhere.

Simon has been assigned to watch over Kensi but without letting her know. That is no easy task as Kensi is surrounded by danger. As they become friends she begins to trust him until a secret is revealed. Oops maybe Simon should have told her that he is there to protect her. That just adds to the depth of this story. The author is well equipped in bringing characters to life with flaws that readers can relate to. I love that there is always a faith element in her stories.

The humor in the book is a breath of fresh air which I really enjoyed. The banter between the two main characters flows easily and you can see how their relationship grows. The story is exciting and I loved how we are kept guessing as to who is after Kensi and why till the very end. Great book with everything a reader needs to become engaged in the story.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is one of the more unusual books of Havig’s writing career. She has written quite a few—across a good number of different genres—but of her historical books, this one feels like it’s got a thing all its own going on, what with the split-time feel and the setting. I also believe the history side of this story is one of the more unusual choices. Granted, most of the book is post-World War II, but the part of the story set just after the Alamo? Fascinating, to say the least!

This wasn’t my favorite of Havig’s books—not even my favorite of her historical fiction titles. This didn’t feel quite as put-together and polished as her more recent books do, and I didn’t find the read as gripping as I’ve come to expect from her. If I were perfectly honest, I struggled with the Spanish side of the story. I loved the family culture that came through these pages, but the extent to which Spanish words and phrases were used did drag the story down for me. I appreciated that translations were given, but in the end, the same information ended up on the same page twice, so that began to feel a bit repetitive.

The history, though. The setting, and the characters! I loved them all. The two main storylines in this book were a lot of fun, and made me want to know more—I am looking forward to the promised rest of the series sometime, if she ever gets around to writing more. The romance was sweet, even if a bit misdirected (I’m looking at you, Avelino). And I also appreciated that this book brought in PTSD, and how loving care can help alleviate some of the issues stemming from that.

Overall, this was a good read; not my favorite, but not bad, either. If you enjoy historical fiction with a dash of romance, especially stories featuring family, I think you’d probably enjoy this book.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion of it.

Trust Fall by Chautona Havig is the twelfth book in the Suamalie Islands series. Eve “Kensi” Kensington feels that grief has held her captive long enough. She desires to move on after the death of her fiancé six years ago; Kensi moves to St. Alyn to help Ezra with the new boat book business. Having a great therapist on the island is just a bonus. She finds herself in danger, and a man has been sent to protect her.

As part of the West Coast Agency, Simon Garver is tasked with protecting her without her knowledge. I love how it builds the characters and the storyline.

Anytime I pick up a book by Chautona Havig, I quickly find myself engrossed in it. Her storyline and characters draw me into the story.

So, if you enjoy books set on islands, check out Trust Fall by Chautona Havig,

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

This book has been on my TBR list for quite a while, and I was so thrilled to finally fit it in this past month! I loved the other books in this series; Chautona has a way of writing mysteries that is both fun and engaging. And I love the main characters in this series—they could quite easily be some of my all-time favorites (right now, anyway!). I loved a lot of this book.

Unfortunately, it didn’t end up being a favorite of the series for me, though, and I’ve spent the last few days trying to puzzle out why. I’m still not entirely sure, but I think part of the reason why I struggled with this book specifically was that the answers to the mystery weren’t spelled out quite as clearly as in some of the other books in the series. I’m not the kind of person who likes to guess the answer to the mystery—I don’t have that kind of a brain, and would much rather take the journey with the characters. In this book, I ended up being somewhat confused by what was actually going on—whether it was me, the writing style, or the fact that things had to be a bit vague because of what the main character discovered, I don’t know. All I know is that I ended up being confused, and didn’t feel like things were completely wrapped up for me by the end of the book—I still have questions about how several character’s problems were rectified.

Still, I enjoyed this book. I loved being able to get to know Amy a little here, and I also loved the Russell/Madeline thing that’s going on. The history side was fun, especially the photo-developing aspect. I find that process intriguing, although I had to wonder how healthy it was to be around all those chemicals! Overall, it was a good story; I just wish I’d been able to understand what was going on a bit better. A fun mystery, but not my favorite of the series.
