This is even better than Control and Subversion, another book by Harris on Tajikistan. While this book lacks the explicit focus on gender that the other has, given the nature of her research, gender differences form an important theme throughout. It's also notable for examining the opinions of youth in an understudied Muslim context.

I'm not 100% on board with Harris methodologically, but this is one of the few ethnographic looks at gender relations in the Central Asian former Soviet republics. The author makes a lot of good points, her findings are interesting, and the work raises many new questions. Recommended for those interested in the region or in shifting gender relations in international contexts.
