I enjoyed reading this book very much! Although it is not one large book, it is a compilation of multiple different stories regarding he sun and the moon (twelve stories to be exact)! Each story is from a different culture and therefore has a different position on how the sun and moon came to be and stories involving them! For example, the story “The Woman in the Moon” is a Maori story and is about how a woman cursed the moon for putting out its light, causing her to injure herself and is then taken by the moon and put into the face of it! This story corresponds with the saying “the man in the moon” and contradicts is saying it is not a man, but in fact a woman. Another story titled “The Sun’s Daughter” is a story from the Cherokee Indians and is about the amount of control that the sun has on the earth. For example, when the sun is angry it can burn everyone up and “start a fever among the people” and when the sun is sad and crying it can cause a flood.
Having these different stories but all relating back to the sun and moon are extremely entrancing and captivating for the students/readers. Also, the students/readers can use these stories as inspirations to write their own stories about the sun and moon! The illustrations that go along with these stories also capture the readers’ attention and allow them to visualize the events of the story. Also, the bright colors and interested patterns keep the readers engaged and interested in the culture of the story that they are reading!

I liked the first page of this book, it listed where the stories come from and had a world map with the countries labeled and the people who told the stories listed under the labels. On top of the map were additional illustrations of tribal symbols that also associated the tales with the people who told them. I loved how each of the different tales were illustrated because they made you aware, just from the illustrations, where the story came from. I like how many of the stories from the different cultures envision a God who made the sun and the earth and that the God is in their image. I also liked how the different Myths were all an attempt by people to explain how the sun and the moon came about before there was science to answer the questions. The theme of this book was about how the Sun and Moon came to be, told by different cultures.… (mais)
