Heather Guerre continues her Tooth & Claw series - giving us an even better understanding of the Paranormal world she has created - and the creatures inhabiting this lush world.

Jules has returned home - recently divorced - to work at her grandmother's convenience store. Her ex-husband was controlling and emotionally abusive, leaving Jules traumatized. While working at the store, she meets Max, a character we briefly meet in Cold Hearted. Max has left his Alaskan pack to travel around the country in search of his mate. Upon their first meeting, Max and Jules feel a pull toward one another instantly. However, it takes a few encounters before they begin to explore their mutual attraction. Once they recognize this connection between one another, Jules opens up about her past and allows Max to tend to her vulnerabilities. In turn, Max shows Jules his wolf and teaches her about his family and his pack life. This was such an incredibly sweet time for our couple.

The romance in this book is superb. I kept noticing how Max was so attentive to Jules and how he was always doing things so she knew he cared and respected her. Their banter was lovely. It really did feel like two souls that were complimentary of each other finally had connected . . . and it was very spicy!!

This book has a pretty severe tonal shift about mid-way through. When I say it was unexpected I MEAN IT! The events beginning in the second half of the book really did a number on our MC's. To remain spoiler-free, I will have to keep it vague - a change to our MC's dynamic happens and it was frightening and wonderful. Their relationship took a hit but by the end of the book this couple felt like they earned their HEA.

Heather Guerre outdid herself weaving this beautiful and at times complicated story together. She has become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to book 4 in this series!

CW's: a lot of gore! This is a gore-heavy book so be prepared for a lot of blood, biting, violent vampire behavior, etc. FMC has trauma from a former toxic relationship, explicit sex scenes, primal play. The author does provide content notes at the beginning of this book as well!… (mais)
