Never Give Up: A Life of Adventure by Bear Grylls is an autobiography by the celebrity adventurer. Mr. Grylls is a former SAS soldier, Chief Scout, and a TV presenter on survival-type shows.

While I was never a huge fan of the author’s TV shows, I certainly appreciate his many accomplishments throughout his life. Someone who had done so much, and a success by any measure, not necessarily monetary, has much to share with the rest of us.

In Never Give Up: A Life of Adventure, author Bear Grylls shares anecdotes from his life, business, TV shows, as well as family adventures. The stories are written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner with much humility, but little structure. One can open up the book to almost any page and start reading.

The structure works because the book mainly concentrates on three aspects of the author’s life: adventure, business, and personal. As a fan of movies, and, of course, books about movies, I certainly enjoyed that part. The second part, business, was interesting but started to be repetitive. Mr. Grylls counts his business ventures, failures, and what he learned from them. An important aspect indeed, but the mantra of “never give up” is repeated ad nauseam.

For some reason, the author feels the need to re-introduce every celebrity over and over again, which I found annoying. In the last part, the author recounts all the amazing people he met, not necessarily celebrities and royalty, but memorable people of all walks of life. I did appreciate how he takes time to be with his family as an utmost priority, as well as acknowledging those who helped him on his journey – the sign of a big heart indeed.

This is a positive and encouraging book. I would not, however, call it an all-encompassing biography. There’s some self-reflection, but it’s mostly composed of short chapters (3 pages on average, I believe) consisting of amusing stories from Mr. Grylls’ life and career.

A good overview of some outdoor pursuits in the air, in the water and on the land.

Bear's writing style is friendly and conversational. The book is replete with illustrations and pictures. His enthusiasm comes through and is inspiring.

As with all Bear's books the chapter sizes are great; allowing each to be reqd easily at a short sitting.

The treatment of each of the pursuits leaves one wanting more details; it would be a nice addition if there was a bibliography or list of organisations at the back. However this is a small thing and does not detract from the excellent and inspiring presentation of options for adventure for young and old.

Well done!
