This book is actually a short story. It takes place on another planet with alien beings, although a human appears (Freebon) and is a main character. Hermione is a dog-like creature with four legs and 2 arms and sharp claws. She has a two year old son, who will be taken away in four more years to live with other males in the wilderness. She wants to have a daughter, who will stay with her forever. You see, females on this planet live in the city, are educated, have technology, and work. Males, on the other hand, live in the wilderness and are only good for fertilizing the female’s eggs. This is a novel about gender inequality, but also about romance, and reproduction. Hermione needs money to be able to hunt for a male to fertilize her egg, and when Freebon appears, she has found her money and a new “friend!”
At first I wasn’t sure about this book at all, whether it was my cup of tea or not. But as I got into it, I liked it. It is well-written and imaginative, but too short! When it ended it was like, “What, that’s it? I want more!” I think it’s a good YA book, but as a senior adult, I also enjoyed it.
