“Ruth’s First Christmas Tree” is a short novella (55 pages) published back in 2012 and featuring beloved character Ruth Galloway who, as the title suggests, is trying to find a Christmas tree for the first time because little Kate, now 2 years old, has never had one (she was obviously too young last year!). Slight mayhem ensues, and the outcome isn’t what Ruth hoped, but she and Kate and Cathbad all have a good time with trees and Nelson and his family are not too much of an impediment. I don’t know how I didn’t stumble upon this for some 12 years, but I’m glad to have found it and to read it even out of season because one can never have too much of Ruth Galloway!… (mais)

The Outcast Dead is number six in the Ruth Galloway series of books. I would highly recommend they are read in order but the book could be read as it is.

This one sees Nelson on the case of a mother accused of killing her children. Ruth however is investigating the legend of Mother Hook when bones are found at Norwich Castle.

I quite enjoyed this one and for now are still invested in the series. There is the ongoing saga with Nelson and Ruth and at the moment the situation seems stable. I just hope that in the next few books the situation becomes more interesting.

Then there is Cathbad. He is one of my all time favourite characters. He does remind me of Professor Hutton with his hair and Cape and I just love him. He has a situation of his own going on now and I just hope that in future books that it doesn't change him and he remains the character he is.

This series of books so far are so easy to read and I get through the books quickly. I'm not a fan of police procedure but in this case it's not too heavy and the books are more about the characters. I love the folklore, superstitions and legends that are always in the books too.

Looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

It’s now 1966; Max Mephisto is divorced, his daughter Ruby has a newborn, and murder is once again afoot: a magician’s assistant is murdered in her rooming house and the primary suspect is the magician with whom she worked, Ted English. Max knows that magician, known as the Great Deceiver, and is reluctantly drawn into investigating on his behalf. Meanwhile, Superintendent Edgar Stephens has WDC Meg Connolly working on the case, while his wife Emma and Sam, her partner in a detective agency, are asked by the parents of the murdered woman to investigate as well. With all that talent looking into the crime, one would think it should be quickly solved, but it takes another death before the various parties even begin to look in the right direction….This latest entry in the Brighton mysteries (also known as the Magic Men series) avoids the anachronisms found in its immediate predecessor (“The Midnight Hour”) and there are a lot of nice tidbits about the fading world of traveling variety shows, which by the mid-1960s had been largely supplanted by television. Indeed, some of the characters in this book are former variety performers now working in television; that era is quite nicely captured here. I also continue to enjoy the relationships between the main characters here, which are all advanced a little in this story, but I found there were a few too many magicians and former magicians forming the pool of suspects: they just weren’t differentiated enough for me to keep who was who straight, which resulted in the ending being a bit of a let-down. Still, entertaining enough for a mild recommendation.… (mais)

When Cassie Fitzgerald was at school in the late 90 s, she and her friends killed a fellow student. Almost 20 years later, Cassie is a happily married mother who loves her job-as a police officer. She closely guards the secret she has all but erased from her memory.
One day her husband finally persuades her to go to a school reunion. Cassie catches up with her high-achieving old friends from Manor Prk School- among them two politicians, a rock star, and a famous actress. But then, shockingly, one of them, Garfield Rice, is found dead in the school bathroom, supposedly from a drug overdose. As Garfield was an eminent-and controversial- MP and the investigation is high profile, it’s headed by her boss, DH Harbinder Kaur, freshly, promoted and newly arrived in London. The trouble is, Cassie can’t shake the idea that one of them has killed again.… (mais)
