River of Porcupines by Canadian author G. K. Aalbourg is a western historical novel set in the early 1800s. The book won the 2019 Spur Award for best historical novel, but I found it a fairly standard story. What I did enjoy was the setting of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Touching on the rivalry between the Hudson’s Bay Company and the North-West Company of fur traders, we follow the adventures of Garth Cameron, a young fur trapper who works for David Thompson of the North-West Company. He is charged with guiding a young metis woman to safety when it becomes apparent that the brutal Hudson Bay trapper, Louis Savard has his eyes on her. The story then swings back and forth with the young woman, Ilona, at times with Garth and at others in Louis Savard’s hands. To keep things exciting, the book also throws in confrontations with both Blackfoot and Cree Indians.

From their base at Rocky Mountain House in Alberta, the story takes us along the Athabasca River and into lands that would someday become Jasper National Park as the men pursue each other in a desperate attempt to claim Ilona. I did enjoy the fact that Ilona did not play the part of the victim, she proved to be resourceful at both survival in the wilderness and in keeping these men from overtaking her life.

This is an older romance novel from 1981 and ... boy ... how very far we've come, ladies! Although the authors description of Western Canada, minerals mining, and boom towns is so wonderful I almost felt like I was transported there, the romance between Grey and Kelly was just ... borderline abusive. Idealizing a man who's mean and likes to push your buttons all the time? Couples who can't stop fighting? The predatory grey taking all kinds of liberties with his employee's body, who he barely even knows, just to 'teach her a lesson?'

Run, Kelly! Run! Run away from this man! I am -so- glad women are no longer taught to put up with this hogwash!

Like all of Victoria Gordon's books, this one paints such a breathtaking portrait of remote Australia and the minerals mining boomtown that I was actually inspired to google many of the places the author wrote about and read more on Wikipedia. The way he describes the landscape (yes ... V.Gordon is a he) transports you right into the scenery. The cause of the initial antagonism between the couple and many of the obstacles they face are believable enough. The overbearing soon-to-be-ex girlfriend is catty enough to be appropriately dislikeable and a credible contrast to the heroine. The whole thing about the sick aunt, however, not so much. These two don't like each other and, by the end, I was left wondering why all of a sudden they did. He's overbearing and what's with the whole 'force kiss her to show her who's boss' thing?

Not a waste of time to read because of the interesting ride to another country and way of life, but as far as romance goes, meh...
