A young Taiwanese girl named Lisa Lin narrates this picture-book exploration of her life, with her narrative organized around a painting she created of her family making mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The book includes ten two-page sections devoted to such topics as family, city and country, as well as the moon calendar and making and eating mooncakes, and is illustrated with photographs, as well as Lin's original artwork. A book I discovered while seeking out stories about the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, Taiwan: Lisa Lin's Painting "Making Mooncakes" is part of the Young Artists of the World series, created around the original paintings of children from different countries, and published in collaboration with the IACA World Awareness Children's Museum. Based in Glen Falls, New York, this museum collects children's art and educational artifacts from around the globe. Although not what I was initially seeking, I found this book informative, and I greatly appreciated the idea behind the series to which it belongs. Namely, to foster greater awareness of global cultural diversity among the young, by using the artwork and stories of actual children. Recommended to picture-book readers seeking books about Taiwan, or featuring the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.… (mais)
