Very good all through---about family secrets, relationships, and a slice of life in the pacific northwest (the one vegan cookbook with slightly borked recipes that everyone owns nevertheless). It's funny that the entire book is called "Calling Dr. Laura"---that's only a few pages in the middle of the book, and I'm not sure it's even the climax.

However, it was the last chapter really put it over the top for me. Georges' illustrations convey the intensity of her feelings very well.

graphic memoir. A teen adopts a "problem" dog from a Kansas City shelter that would be a lifelong companion (for the next 16 years) as she moves to Portland, becomes an artist/musician, comes out as bisexual/lesbian, and deals with depression.

Heartfelt story with lovely black/white ink + wash-type illustrations, recommended for any dog- and animal-lover.

This book touched my heart so much. Every time Nicole's mother asked her to name the stuffed animal after the guy that gave it to her it made me think of my mom while I was growing you. When she got a new man she would tell me brother, "You know (so and so) would really like it if you would call him dad." Both of our moms used us to trap a man (men). I really felt this story and I loved everything about it. It hurt to find out that she just missed the one person she didn't know she was looking for, but she did find something else. Great book.… (mais)

This is a vibrant memoir, full of wit, pathos, and beautiful art. The art style conveys the emotional content perfectly. To me, this was about healing from a turbulent childhood. Along the way, Nicole reflects on personal information and secrets, and this seemed to also be a reflection on the author/reader relationship. When it comes down to it, this was so full of heart and I loved it!
