This book looks at the life of Melbourne poet Shelton Lea, who at the age of 13 months was adopted by the wealthy Darrell Lea family (of chocolate fame) along with 2 other children, as play mates for the family’s children.
His cool and unloving parents failed to understand and nourish such an extroverted, inquisitive child and after finding himself in constant trouble at school, Shelton was sent to a variety of boys’ homes, and was eventually made a ward of the state. It was through these turbulent years that Shelton developed an interest in poetry (he discovered a book of poetry written by Ezra Pound while in prison) and met Barrett Reid who was to become a great mentor and friend. The book follows Shelton and his wild, bohemian lifestyle, branding him the last true romantic poet. A highly skilled performer, Shelton was known for his passionate poetry readings and downtrodden simpatico, with his deep experience of life directing his creativity. Throughout his life Shelton never lost his positive approach and open kindness and humanity toward all people.
I was thoroughly captured by his story and would recommend this book to anyone working with young people.
