John Garrett (1) (1940–)

One of the best books I read about black and white photography.
Every picture has a brief, but thorough summary about settings used to make the photo, what film and developer was used, and what exactly was done in the darkroom, f-setting, time, dodge or burn and how long! It's explained so well, that it becomes so understandable to do this yourself with your own pictures.

Still reading but so far I'm finding this a really useful book for beginners. It not only gives you tips and hints, it also gives you exercises to go away and try.

Do not be misled by the title into thinking that this book has no relevance in the digital age. Most digital cameras are designed to copy the handling and image qualities of the 35mm camera, the most widespread camera format of the 20th century; and many people forget that digital photography is, at heart, photography first and digital second. This book was written with the intelligent beginner in mind but has much that more experienced hands can learn from.
