teen audio fiction (7hrs 41min, read by voice actor Jade Wheeler) - Just a little too late to have a Sweet 16 party (which her overworked nursing home aide mom couldn't afford anyway), Mahalia decides to throw a Coming Out party to which she hopes to invite the new cute girl Siobhan (with her light brown freckled skin and adorable Irish lilt) whom she met at Naomi's birthday party. Takes place in San Diego area, California, ~April-June.

cute teen romance touching on race/class issues -- school group project in history class, unaffordable SAT classes, working at a grocery store, fighting with best friend and with mother. So much in here, and some pretty complicated relationships.

Representation: Black main character
Trigger warnings: Sexual assault and harassment mentioned

6/10, this just wasn't a good YA novel, I've never heard of this author, but the first book from her left me feeling underwhelmed so the author is not off to a good start since I found so many issues within the plot that drastically lowered my enjoyment of this and if the author resolved these problems it would've been a better book so where do I even begin? Despite being 300 pages long, this novel was difficult to get through, the story is about Josie Wright or Josie for short and she wants to write an article exposing a guy called Roy Lennox, for sexually assaulting and harassing some people, but it took forever for her to do that, she just drank a bottle of wine, fell in love with a character, stopped liking him, and then liking him again? I don't understand why every single character's race and gender had to be mentioned, and Josie was just so whiny all the time, but I didn't realise she had anxiety, that explains all the pessimistic thoughts she has. If you want a book with a female lead and also is more impactful than this skip this one and try When the Ground is Hard instead.… (mais)

Absolutely adorable! Mahalia was such a delightful and brilliant character. The plot was engaging, avoiding the trap of becoming over the top and instead feeling like it could be about any real teenager dealing with real-life problems. The side characters, from the avocado guy to the teachers, were excellent, the relationship between Mahalia and her mom and her best friend felt flawed and real. Loved this.

I felt like this was a bit too on the nose at points, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Great cast of characters who had actual personalities (even the family members!)

One tiny thing irked me though--one moment that really alarmed me was when Simone says something about how she didn't know how to masturbate until she was in eighth grade as though it were something to be ashamed of or she were behind the curve. With such nice ace rep, how do you have a comment like that?!
