John Gargus retired in 1983 from a twenty-seven-year career in the U.S. Air Force. Inducted into the Air Commando Hall of Fame in 2003, Gargus currently lives in Henderson, Nevada.

It is always good to read history written by participants. The Son Tay Raid is no exception. Gargas tells the story of the planning, execution and aftermath of an attempt to rescue POWs from a camp just miles from Hanoi.
The planning and interservice coordination were monumental feats that were almost as miraculous as the raid itself. In addition, the whole thing was kept secret until after the raid. Gargas also added information from the North Vietnamese point of view.
One would not think a book filled with a lot of detail about training and flight paths would not be very interesting, but this book is just the opposite. It held my attention. I always wanted to read just 'one more page' before turning off the light. I highly recommend this book.… (mais)
