The Earth's Surface is a little book that covers the majority of geographic terms. Each page has a picture with a number of geographic forms that are labeled with their term. For example, one page shows a coastline with pictures and labels for peninsula, point, island, islet, inlet, cove, and beach with the text saying, "the coastline can be rocky and uneven." Turing the page which is partly transparent, new text is revealed says, "...or else flat and sandy." On this page, the form is shown or a bay, a sandbank, and a dune. The reader can see common features of the coastline and also understand that not all coastlines are the same. I would mostly seek out actually geographic forms from around the world to accompany this book. For example, when my son was obsessed with volcanos we not only read books about volcanos, but we also looked at a picture of real volcanos around the world. We also made a paper mache volcanos around a soda bottle that we erupted with vinegar and baking soda. This book is a nice starting point but if a child is eager to learn more about the earth's surface additional material and resources would be needed.… (mais)
