Useful as being a thorough life of a man who was unusual as being a Boston Democrat --a view shared by Hawthorne and Melville but few others. The author argues he was essentially a strong nationalist Unionist, equally opposed to radical abolitionists and southern disunionists. In 1923, this was seen sympathetically; now we are more likely to side with the abolitionists. Based on a through study of Cushing's own papers.

1398 Daniel Webster Volume I 1782-1830, by Claude Moore Fuess (read 31 July 1976) This biography was written in 1930 and I found it to be dated. I said when I finished it that he should have a more modern biography, and that I "was not sure" i would read Volume II--and I never did. But I have read the very excellent biography by Robert Remini, and various other things on him. When I put "Webster" into my book list searcher this comes out:

2127 Carl Schurz: Reformer (1829-1906), by Claude Moore Fuess (read 6 Feb 1988) Schurz was born 2 Mar 1829 in a castle in Germany (his parents were tenants on the castle farm) and died 14 May 1905. His really was an amazing life. He came to the U.S. in 1852 knowing no English, but was a candidate for Lt. Gov of Wisconsin in 1857. He grew to be a master orator, was a general in the Civil War, and Republican Senator from Missouri from 1869 to 1875 and Secretary of the Interior in Hayes' Administration. He supported Greeley in 1872, Cleveland in 1884, 1888, and 1892, Bryan in 1900 and Parker in 1904. He was usually right in his positions. This biography is usually laudatory and is not too penetrating, but it was worth reading.… (mais)

Claude Fuess also wrote a book on the history of Amherst. His biography of Stanley King is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of Amherst College. Stanley King remains one of the greatest graduates of the college.
