Dr. Julie Freed is a well educated woman from Connecticut who is now a professor at Tulane. She met and married a Southern man who turned out to be a horrible alcoholic. I skimmed some of the story about how happy their marriage was in the beginning. I know the author has to show why she married him in the first place, but we've all made mistakes. The best thing about her marriage was she got a beautiful baby girl out of it.

Just as Katrina was hitting her husband, who was living in Miami Beach, tells her in an email that he wants a divorce. While she is dealing with a devasting storm that will take away her home and everything she owns he is emailing and calling her trying to get out of the marriage. Unfortunate timing, but it really shows his true colors.

When Katrina hit I was in Massachusetts. What I know about the storm is what I heard in the news or heard from others. I wasn't there. A lot of what I heard was about the plight of people in New Orleans, about how corrupt the government was, and about how people were mistreated. It was interesting to read a story by someone who lived out of the city, had money and resources, and had what she needed as much as possible to get through this horrible "act of nature".

Whether you read the story to learn about her relationship or whether you read it to learn more about Katrina, you probably won't be disappointed.

Naked is a riveting memoir about the simultaneous loss of a young woman’s home and life as she knew it as a result of Hurricane Katrina and the loss of her marriage as a result of a cheating husband.

The author weaves in the two narratives of preparing for and escaping from the storm with the simultaneous dissolution of her marriage. The hurricane becomes a metaphor for the breakdown of her marriage.

Her writing is vivid and engaging and once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. The first chapter pulled me in and kept me turning the pages until the end.

I learned about Hurricane Katrina from the comfort of my intact living room. But Julie offers me a raw and powerful account of how Katrina impacted lives. Her scenic details and development of believable characters brought me into the chaos and drama of the moments. Her flashbacks of her courtship and marriage helped me experience the author’s hopes and dreams for a happy marriage and ultimately the deep sense of loss and pain involved when the marriage dissolves. Through it all, her resiliency and hope shine through.

And, as in any satisfying read, she brings us full circle to her place of peace. I highly recommend this memoir to anyone who has ever triumphed over deep loss or who needs hope in finding peace in the midst of loss.

This book is a memoir that takes us beyond the headlines we all watched on the news. This is a deeply personal story that is more than just loss of home and items, and dealing with being dislocated.

I felt like I was reading her personal diary, and the writing was so deep and emotional it felt like she was sitting across a table from me.

I felt her strength and saw how she grew stronger throughout her ordeal. She is not one for sympathy or one who wallows in self pity.

She showed dignity, intelligence and compassion for others all throughout her tale.

This is not a self-serving memoir like so many seem to be. No, hers is a story that needs to be shared. Should be shared. We all could benefit from the lessons we learn from her experience.

I received this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review.
