I have noticed that when I read lit, it tends to be Jewish lit. An Irish friend reads mostly Irish lit (tho I don't envy her the Joyce!). That said, I adore this book-- it's one of my favorite "real" ones. I need to read it again.

Well written, but a little too psychological for my taste. I read nonfiction primarily to be entertained and this was mostly just depressing. I couldn't decide if I was meant to like the protagonist or not. Characters were well developed, just not my cup of tea

A very ambitious first novel. I really enjoyed the sections with Alex as narrator. The trachimbord sections were interesting, but I found all the loveless sex and rape, even if they were meant to demonstrate something about love, a bit off-putting.

I found the book hard to relate to despite having so many familiar touch points. Ok, don’t eat meat, but doesn’t that just make it cheaper and invite the next person to eat it? The author does not discuss the many ways one could tune meat eating into culture, only one and only one main view to the climate problem. Most of the ideas are first order, the complexity of the problem is not emphasised.
