The dust cover states that 'These books are intended for the reader who has limited knowledge of the subject, perhaps culled from visits to museums, but who may be encouraged to start a collection of the less expensive pieces'.
The pieces may have been less expensive when the book was first published, but that is hardly the case now. Additionally, much of the jewellery comes with caveats--tortoiseshell and tiger claw jewellery are either illegal to sell or special permits must be used to trade or deal with these items.
