Basic fantasy novel – first of a long series

This fantasy novel is the first in the Crystal Kingdom series and deals with our hero, Lou, a farm hand, who loses his source of income and becomes a skuller, a local mercenary guard, to earn enough to get his family through the winter. This takes place in a cursed land where animals become aggressive killers at night.

Magic enters into the story in the form of a fire mage and an ice mage.

Despite a fair amount of repetition, the book is quite engaging but lacking in originality. It certainly has not convinced me that the rest of the series is of interest.
