This book starts off as the story of a food writer/radio guy. The author talks about New Orleans food and the food scene. The second half is about the way Hurricane Katrina affected New Orleans, the restaurants, the author, and the food scene. It is a story that is very different form other accounts of the Hurricane and it is both interesting and hunger-inducing!

Anything about New Orlean's is so interesting for me, never been, but reading about it is fun , this book was all about the restaurants and food of the people. It was a great book to read on a snowy day in New England, towards the end the author mentions being part of an episode of Anthony Bordain's No Reservations, so I found it on amazon and watched it! The food seems to be a big factor in bringing life back after the hurricane. Great read!

New Orleans is about food and music, and Tom Fitzmorris has long been New Orleans' premier food critic. In this book he shares the history of New Orleans' most famous restaurants, both big (e.g., the Brennan family and Commander's Palace) and small. The book spans both pre- and post-Katrina. It includes many of his favorite recipes; the one for barbecue shrimp is to die for. He also has a daily three-hour radio show entitled Food Talk" which is devoted to food and takes calls from listeners. You can listen to the Saturday show live on WWL's website, which also archives his older shows as podcasts. I'd rank this book a notch above [Gumbo Tales] by Roahan, another great book about New Orleans food. If you are planning a trip to New Orleans, this book will guide you to the newest great restaurants and the obscure dives known only to locals.… (mais)

This is a wonderful cross-section of the cooking of New Orleans. As a lover of New Orleans food, I can certainly attest to that. The recipes run the full spectrum of easy to hard and a wonderful history of each dish is provided. I made the easy recipe Heavenly Hash and it reminded me of the candy that was sold at DH Holmes department store. I also have prepared a roasted asparagus dish that was EASY and FANTASTIC. Something that needs to be mentioned is that Mr. Fitzmorris is a great everyday chef, he has provided many recipes that he has concocted himself. This is in addition to many recipes from famous restaurants. See especially, his recipe for Oysters Rockefeller (which, by the way, Antoine's has asked him for because it's "embarassingly close" to the very secret one at that restaurant. I have a recipe that has been in a Louisiana friend's family for many generations, and was supposedly given to her family by the original propiretor of Antoines - and no, neither has spinach in it) and for Aline's (his mother) Crawfish Etouffee. His idea for substituting boulette's for the stuffed crawfish heads in Crawfish Bisque is masterful. Oh, I could go on and on, but I am getting so hungry! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in eating GOOD food.… (mais)
