Cory Doctorow called this book "leftist military science fiction," and I had no idea what that meant. Then I read the first few pages and it all made sense.

I'm mostly a fan of Robert Evans' podcasts and think he does a great job writing about historical figures. That talent does not bleed into his developing of his own characters. I don't think I cared about a single person in this book, because none of them had any real depth. They had the beginnings of depth, but never quite made it there. Also, the dialogue felt forced and childish. And, as much as I love drugs and don't hate violence this book was pretty much just those two things.

I feel like AK published this book solely because Robert Evans is a big name and they knew it would sell a lot of copies.

Interesting, quite a surprise read from an author unknown to me from a small publisher:
Somewhere between 'expanse' and 'FK USA', mixed in with some Richard Morgan type action.

The plot is better than many, writing is gripping, and characters have more depth than in many other sci-fy.

Even with all social, political perhaps philosophical undertones, the author's fascination of violence and drugs - to the point of endorsment - were too much for (my) comfort or liking.

2022 book #61. 2022. Started as a military sci fi set in the remains of the US in 2070 but turned out to have a lot of character development and ended quite different than I expected. A pretty good read and an interesting story if a bit gory at times.

I'm a fan of Evans' podcasts so I thought I would give his book a try. It honestly reminds me of a cross of Fallout and Shadowrun, without the higher end fantasy/sci-fi aspects. I highly recommend the audio book version, and I don't usually enjoy audio books. The Manny and Sasha chapters are kind of typical dystopian/YA protagonist fair, and while good didn't stand out too far from what I usually read. Roland though.... Roland is one hell of a character. I'd always be a little disappointed if his chapter was on the shorter side, he's just a "fun" viewpoint character style that I have not come across outside of MAYBE the Narrator from Fight Club. Give it a listen over a read.… (mais)
