The eve of WWII, and a Pan American flying boat is about to arrive in New Zealand, when word is received that the Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor. Unable to return along the normal routes, the captain and crew are instructed to remove external markings, maintain radio silence and ferry the aircraft to Pan Am's New York base, by going west. With no established routes between them and the Atlantic, the crew borrows an atlas from the library to start a plan for the trip home, which encounters many challenges. Pilots will particularly appreciate this book, as it gives a good sense of the technology at the time. But at the same time, the author, who was a Pan Radio Operator during this era, reconstructs the story in a lively narrative, which keeps you on the edge of your seats.
