When you read about other people’s lives, it really makes you appreciate the “normality” of your own dysfunctional family. The fact that the author survived her childhood and early adult life is quite remarkable. I’m glad she did, because I really enjoyed this memoir. I was rooting for her all along, really not sure if she could overcome the deadly spiral of drugs and alcohol that ruled her life. Her story is beautifully written with the right mixture of humor and pathos. I loved the antidotal reminiscences of events from her childhood. I marveled at her ability to get through high school, college and a masters degree while living in a bottle of whiskey. And I cheered when she finally made the decision to dig herself out of the abyss in which she lived. I plan to follow this author and look forward to reading what she writes next.… (mais)
