Really rather disappointing for DeMille. I know he writes long books, but this one meandered along, and could have been just as effective with 200 pages fewer. The story never really grips you in the way other DeMille books do, and that it took me four weeks to read rather than the usual week with his books, tells you that it was an also ran.

Venezuela is a very bad place to be for Americans, if this book is to be believed. Based on my other readings about the country, sadly I do believe it. Once a thriving country, rich because of its oil and a thriving economy, it is now a solid dictatorship rife with corruption and crime. So, Caracas is the perfect place for an AWOL’d soldier escaping the Taliban to be found. But what is his real motive and what is America’s for Venezuela? CID officers Brody and Taylor are sent first to Caracas to find and apprehend him and they follow his tracks deep into the jungle—both places, Caracas and the jungle, are characters as much as the people and as likely to kill them. Action-packed but also a lot of “telling” about back stories and repetition that gets a bit numbing. Still a good read that likely accurately portrays a country in serious distress.… (mais)

The Charm School. Nelson DeMille.1988. This is an oldie but a goodie. The Charm School is a secret complex hidden in the woods outside of Moscow that trains spies to become Americans so they can infiltrate all aspects of American life. Three hundred American soldiers and airmen captured in North Vietnam are imprisoned there and forced to help in the school. A military attaché from the American Embassy finds out about it and eventually is captured and taken there alone with his girl friend, an information officer. This the basis for the TV series, “The Americans,” in which Soviet sTpies pose as a married couple with children and send information back to Moscow. Both the book and he series are fascinating. I mentioned this book to a terrorist expert from Maxwell who goes to our church, and he said of course it was true, and we had the same thing here.… (mais)
