- Anna Dean set about crafting stories at the age of five under the impression that everyone was taught to write in order to pen books. By the time she discovered her mistake, the habit was too deeply ingrained to give up. She resides in the Lake District of England with a husband and a cat. She sometimes works as a Creative Writing tutor and as a guide showing visitors around William Wordsworth's home, Dove Cottage. The mystery was just so-so, but the 3 stars are for the tribute to Jane Austen's Emma. The fact that I didn't know about all the parallels at the beginning made it interesting to analyze and come to realize who was cast in the role of Knightley, Emma, Jane Fairfax, Frank Churchill, and his aunt. Also appreciated the very obvious send-offs of several scenes from Emma including the word game, the strawberry party, the riddles, and everything having to do with the Jane and Frank characters. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other parallels that I missed.
In some authors this all would have seemed like rank plagiarism or like they had no imagination of their own to draw on, but in Anna Dean it was more of a deliberate tribute, and for me it worked. To me it seems like she has a very true, comfortable voice for the Regency era, which is more than I can say for most modern authors attempting to ape Jane Austen.… (mais)

Mystery kind of convoluted, but the best part of the book is Anna Dean's comfortable Regency voice. I've never read a modern author who can get so close. After the previous book, I was expecting more strong Jane Austen tributes, but instead there were only a few minor hints toward Persuasion.

Meh. The mystery was suitably interesting and Dean has a nice command of Regency language. But I felt at a remove from the characters and as though I was being told, not shown. I didn't really disappear into the story at any point, nor did I think about the book when I wasn't reading it. I love the idea of a Regency spinster solving mysteries by being nice to servants and paying attention to what's going on around her, but the execution was lacking.

The dialogue and vocabulary seem spot-on for the time period. I am pretty impressed by this author's grasp of the Austen-like voice. The rest of the books in this series are good, too; I wish the author would write more!… (mais)
