If there's one thing you need to know about me in comparison to this book, I LOVE Monarch Butterflies. I have dedicated multiple gardens at my house to those little suckers, so this book drew me in with the title alone. The cover was also beautiful since it featured a diverse array of characters and butterflies!

About this book:
There are six girls: Clara, Sarah, Alex, Rose, Sophie, and Grace and they are the Sizzling Six (that's an epic name, by the way.). Each girl has some stand out characteristics that sets her apart from each of the other girls in the group. The girls learn about Monarch Butterflies and how to protect them, during a wildly fueled drama fest. Court room drama, worrisome adults and lots of learning occur among the pages of this cute, little book.

My positives:
1. Cast of Characters Index. This is a positive, but it's also listed in my negatives. Since I have not read the past books in this series, I liked having that reference. Stay tuned for why I did not like it.

2. When I was reading this book, it felt like a great read aloud story. I could totally see this as a book parents (or educators!) read to their kids or as an audiobook. The story was made for middle grade and it read like that. I could almost hear the kid narrating the story. I don't typically get this feeling with middle grade books, so it felt like quite the whimsical experience.

3. Butterfly facts. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like a pinch of education in my middle grade novels. Oh, and milkweed! That plant is important to monarches and I have tons in my garden. Shout-out to protecting the butterflies natural habitat!

My negative:
1. I found the cast of characters at the front of the book to be confusing, mostly because I haven't seen that sort of index at the front before. I typically see them at the back of the book to help readers out. Mostly, my negative is about the location. It felt like a lot of reading that I might have been able to pick up in the story. Even having the setting listed at the front seemed... odd to me. It worked, but it just didn't fit in with my normal expectations (which could be a good thing for readers, don't get me wrong).

Overall, this book was a sweet, little read that I'd highly recommend. It's great for middle grade readers who want an adventure with some environmental themes.

Four out of five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Star Bright Books for allowing me an early copy of this book to review!

Datnow has crafted another ecological mystery that will engage and entertain environmental sleuths. A fine writer with a message that will inspire young people to take action to help save our precious natural resources.

Claire Datnow's novel, One Cause Too Many, is the rich and complex story of Valerie Crider, a forty-year-old Southern-born activist struggling to rise above her past. The daughter of a Klansman, Val is haunted by several spectres: her patents' innate bigotry; the death of her brother, Byron, a martyr for the cause of civil rights; her grown son Jason, the product of an interracial affair, whom circumstances forced her to give up for adoption while he was an infant; and her own inability to sustain a meaningful relationship with any of the men who enter her life.
As the novel opens, Valerie has established a semblance of stability after working, and failing, at various charitable or humanistic causes. She is living with Sid Russakoff, a wealthy, 65-year-old entrepreneur; a German Jew who escaped the Nazis as a young man, Sid has his own set of prejudices to deal with. Valerie designs bamboo furniture for a company Sid has set up, assisted by Johnny, a craftsman, and by Medlin Medea, a Mexican who oversees the processing of bamboo from plantations on the Yucatan. The business is thriving, when suddenly Valerie is shot and seriously wounded by an unknown assailant.

Her near-death experience and long recovery force Valerie to confront a number of deep-buried issues. Is Sid truly the man for her? Are the workers Sid employs being fairly treated, or do they deserve a greater share of the profits from the business? Can she-should she-reconcile with the son she gave away? Will she finally be able to come to terms with the death of her beloved brother? Can Val and her bitter mother, Marilyn, ever achieve an understanding of one another?

One Cause Too Many sweeps across three tumultuous decades, encompassing settings from the steamy Amazon to hurricane-wracked Florida, and involving a cast of unique characters who step fully formed from the pages speaking believable dialogue. Claire Datnow's prose is lyrical and evocative: the reader can feel the heat and humidity of the Deep South, see the kudzu creeping like a living carpet and the Spanish moss dripping beard-like from the trees, and smell the magnolia blossoms in the night air. One Cause Too Many is a book to be savored like fine, expensive wine, a vintage with a heady bouquet and an acrid aftertaste that tarries, titillating the tongue.

I was just taking a break from my other stuff in the library that I came across this book on the juvenile shelf at my local library. The book is a breeze to read and will whet your appetite to know more about Edwin Hubble if you have ever been curious about this famous astronomer. Edwin was a giant among his contemporaries and was the reason that Einstein had to make changes in his general theory of relativity.
