As this book clearly demonstrates there are hundreds, if not thousands, of common phrases we use all the time with little or no knowledge of where they come from. Come to think of it, "little or no knowledge" is itself a common phrase, as is "come to think of it". If you're curious as to how some of these phrases originated, "then by all means", "give this book a go". By all means and give it a go. Yeah, I know two more common phrases. Sorry, "I couldn't help myself". "I could go on and on" ...

This is a smorgasbord of facts and snippets of information about cats. From how to say cat in twenty languages; to the cat in history and popular culture; cat related proverbs; the names of famous people's cats; pieces of poetry and the background for common phrases that contain words relating to cats. There doesn't seem to be any order to these but as a fun little book about our feline friends it was a light and entertaining read. I also liked the illustrations by Larry Nielson.

This is a fascinating volume and an oddity from ALA publishing. It turns out that you can purchase quantities of this title from Skyhorse for promotional giving and gifts. It is a fun compilation of all kinds of phrases that adults, not teens have heard and probably use regularly. Keeping up with the Joneses, go down like a lead balloon, Ms., muck-racking, a place for everything and everything in its place, skating on think ice, things that go bump in the night… and on and on and on. For each phrase there is a story behind it and a usage guide. The trivia expert will bask in this one. Great bathroom reading…or, go to sleep reading it rather than counting sheep. You won’t find the current teen lingo here. They will probably think you are old-foggy telling them stories about your phrases, but just think of the terms they are going to have to tell their children about their language… Have fun with this one.… (mais)

About: Cryer digs up the origins and legends of 40 songs

Things I Thought Were Interesting:

* The lyrics to Edelweiss were the last Oscar Hammerstein wrote before he died

* Christopher Plummer (Captain Von Trapp) was overdubbed singing in The Sound of Music movie

* The lyricist of Danny Boy never set foot in Ireland

* Irving Berlin, who wrote White Christmas, had a three-week old son who died on Christmas Day

* Mozart did not compose Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

* Neither God Save the Queen nor The Star Spangled Banner mention the nations they are the anthems of

* Happy Birthday is protected by copyright in the U.S. until 2030

* Waltzing Matilda (which isn't a waltz) had its copyright expire in Australia in 1991, but is copyright in the U.S. until 2011, therefore at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Australia had to pay to use its own song

Pros: Short chapters make for easy reading, well written.

Cons: No citations of sources, many songs I have not heard are covered.
