Perillo needs ex-homicide cop Nico to help him with the murder of a wealthy landowner who best witness only speaks English. The victim's family is something else, but there are as many suspects as there are twists and surprises. Meanwhile, a local man who is their friend becomes ill and love is in the air for several couples.
Widowed ex-NYPD homicide detective (Nico) moves to Tuscany where he has good memories and his wife's family (and they need his help in the restaurant). Remember the adage about taking the man out of the job? He got to be friends with the local Carabinieri (Perillo and Daniele) over a murder and has made many other friends as well including a dog, OneWag/Rocco.
I requested but missed out on a free temporary EARC from via NetGalley, but preordered the audio (available 5 March 2024) to read and add to my series collection. Voice actor Danny Deferrari did a remarkable job EXCEPT that he needs to know that the item is JEWEL-ry and not an ethnic word.

Former NYPD detective Nico Doyle once again helps with an investigation in Italy. A man was found in the trunk of cafe owner Jimmy's vehicle, discovered by Nico's dog One-Wag. The man had been stabbed multiple times. I felt the investigation got lost in the "community story" and made it hard to keep my attention. While the discussion of food reminds people of Martin Walker's Bruno series, the virtual aromas fail to draw me in as do Walker's descriptions. Although I do remember "whodunnit" a few days after completing the novel, I doubt I'll remember a single detail in a month.… (mais)

When the beloved wife of former NYPD detective Nico Doyle dies, he honors her wishes to be buried in her small hometown of Gravigna in Tuscany. During their years together Nico and Rita visited Italy regularly and with her death her family is the only family he has. With no reason to stay in New York, Nico moves near Rita's sister and brother-in-law.

One morning after settling into his small home Nico hears a gunshot and discovers a man's body in the woods nearby. The local maresciallo has only worked one murder investigation and when he learns of Nico's background he asks him to help. Reluctantly, Nico agrees.

Trinchieri has written a good character in Nico, a kind and decent man who has become a bit lost with the death of his wife and the sudden ending of his career. The setting is a place where all things revolve around grapes and wine. The murder itself carries plenty of surprises. I'm requesting the next in the series from ILL today!

he dog shot off deeper into the woods. Nico trudged behind him. 'This better be good, mutt." At the edge of a small clearing, the dog sniffed the air a few times, then lay down, his job complete. When Nico reached the spot, he let out a long breath. What the mutt had been trying to tell him was a doozy. About twelve feet in front of them, at the far edge of the clearing, a man lay on his back, arms and legs spread out at an unnatural angle.
