Reconstruction The Ending of the Civil War, by Avery Craven (read 27 Dec 2011) This 1969 book accepts the merit of much revisionist outlook on Reconstruction, yet cannot be said to adopt the outlook of the revisionists. He generally deprecates the Radical Republicans and decries the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, But he shows that the period of Negro ascendancy after the War and before the old southern power forces regained control of the southern states was not the bad time which was the view held for so long after the Civil War and before the Radical Republicans began to be vigorously defended by more modern writers and historians. So this book finds no heroes in the Reconstruction era, It is a study full of interest to anyone studying the time.… (mais)

2897 The Growth of Southern Nationalism 1848-1861, by Avery O. Craven (read 17 Aug 1996) This 1953 book is volume VI of the series "A History of the South." It covers the period 1848 to 1861-- a period which has always been of great interest to me. The book is not overly pro-Southern, and I could not help but believe the South was consistently wrong all through the period. I think the book does a good job and was well worth reading. Whether I will read any other books of the series remains to be seen. My life will be too short to read all I want to read.… (mais)
