Scott Cook’s Mother Goose rhymes are, for the most part, very short and simple. Some are very popular, and it is interesting for children to learn the same stories in early childhood. Many of the short rhymes have morals. For instance, Humpty Dumpty is only four lines but the lesson is clear since children must understand there are some situations that cannot be fixed. It does not matter how rich and powerful the person is, some decisions are irreversible. English language learners may have a greater challenge understanding the rhymes due to ancient words that are not used very often. For example, In There was a Crooked Man the rhyme uses the words “sixpence” and “stile.” One of the interesting features of Mother Goose is the art that it inspires. I have always found the old English costumes the characters wear interesting as well as the mention of Kings, Queens, Pipers, and jigs. I would recommend this book because of its cultural significance.

PreSchool-Grade 2?Yet another collection of Mother Goose rhymes?this one, however, stands out for its animated artwork. The verses are thoughtfully arranged in topical groupings; less well-known selections are interspersed with familiar favorites. The drawings are so playful and expressive that rogues, simpletons, and other well-loved characters fairly leap off the pages. Rendered in oils in muted shades of predominantly lavender and brown, each small vignette and full-page painting overflows with humorous details of village and countryside. A wide range of emotions is portrayed, and the characters are vibrantly brought to life. A fresh offering.?Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY From School Library Journal

The classic rhymes are illustrated in a lively, whimsical style reminiscent of that of Randolph Caldecott. Active and colorful, the pictures contain some details that might appeal to children who are older than the book's intended audience.
