From the Introduction by Pierre Clarac :

 The aim: to present in an accessible form of a one-volume edition a comprehensive synopsis of the world-literature of all times. This includes information about and critical assessment of authors, about works of literature, plays and poems, about philosophical works, legends etc., and about ideas, schools and movements. A tall order! The work is aimed at teachers and students of literature and all those who love ideas and books.
 The format: more than 4000 entries strictly in alphabetical order regardless of category (for example: Panégyriques (writings by Bossuet), pantoum (a verse form), Pāṇini (ancient Sanskrit grammarian), parabase (performance element of ancient Greek comedy) are all found on the same page). 1500 of these deal with authors: their life and work in relation to their contemporary times, society and ideas. Circa 2200 entries deal with individual works. Circa 600 articles deal with the large literary movements and philosophical ideas: many lesser authors with no separate entry are mentioned here.
 Illustrations: 144 plates (an estimated 1000 illustrations) are included, each documenting particular literary and philosophical ideas and movements. The appendix includes tables where these are visualized in relation to time, place and to each other.
 Concerning its ‘universal’ character: a special effort was made to include near- and far-eastern philosophy and literature.
 Concerning contemporary literature: French authors were selected according to fixed criteria; foreign authors were chosen according to the attention they received by French critics and preference given to those whose work has been translated into French. As translated works are listed under their most common French title (the original title is always added), this will present a problem for foreign (i.e. non-French) users, but is easily overcome by referring to the authors name.

Assessment: This encyclopedia is 50 years old, which limits its usefulness for contemporary literature; to my knowledge no subsequent editions were published. I nevertheless consult it frequently; I prefer it to the Internet where nowadays much of the information given here may be found after some - often tedious - search. The selection as a whole gives a French perspective: interesting, and an anti-dote to the prevalent and often parochial (because so little of non-English literature is translated) English perspective.
