This is an absorbing, academic but approachable book that -- for me, at least -- presents a portrait of Tycho Brahe and his work that is refreshingly different from the one I'd known. For one, Brahe was not 'simply' a great observational astronomer who collected reams of data more accurate than that prior to his advent: he was in fact a theorist as well, and one grounded in a fascinating esoteric brand of Neoplatonism I knew nothing about. He also comes across as considerably more wide-minded (while perhaps understandably fond of his high noble standing) than typically presented by, say, Arthur Koestler or even John Banville (whose novel _Kepler_ I love nonethless).
