- Ida Chittum was born in North Canton, Ohio. She was educated in a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade, and was a passionate reader. She was later instrumental in bringing a library to her longtime home in the small town of Findlay, Illinois.
She and her family lived in various places in the USA and Panama, but her heart remained in the Ozarks where she spent her childhood.
By her telling, she took up writing as a profession when she received the check for her first published story, "Willy's Money," from Highlights magazine. She wrote numerous children's books, including the collection Tales of Terror (1975). She received an award in recognition for her outstanding contribution to children's literature from Central Missouri State University.
She was also a popular speaker with the many schoolchildren she visited along with her talking mynah, Poo Bah.
