MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Oh my goodness what an amazing read. Life has not been easy for Laney since she lost her best friend in an accident and lost her boyfriend at the same time. Then her mother’s memoir was released, and her nana suffers several ways of hurt by the accusations in this memoir, not to forget what it does to nana’s Seaside Inn. Laney and her nana had a lot to endure.

The author deals with many tough issues in The Way Back. A lot of these issues go back many years and family hurt is so deep it will take a lot to even break through. It is when Laney starts cleaning out some of the family’s old stuff that she finds a centry old journal written by a young lightkeeper as she makes sure the lights are on each night in the lighthouse. This was one of my favorite parts of the story, and I am going to leave it at that. You will understand when you read this book. One thing I will say is, I would love to see that old journal published, it would make a great companion to this book. There is so much more I wanted to read in that journal, and I know there must have been so much more there. Just my thoughts!

There is so much going on in this book. I love the setting of the old Seaside Inn with its Lighthouse highly reaching so beautifully. I was also glad Laney and her nana began to form a relationship, just as I had with my grandmother. Jason showing up was a little touchy as first, but it was good. I enjoyed he and Laney’s conversations and how he helped her so much. I couldn’t understand nana speaking up about the memoir at first, but toward the end, I got it. And I must say that is one of the most beautiful endings I’ve read in a book. Some may not feel like that, but I do. I was completely mesmerized by this story.

I’m giving The Way Back by Heidi Chiavaroli Five Stars and I wish I could give it more. If you enjoy beaches and old lighthouses, Christian historical fiction, or just a good clean book to read, I highly recommend this one.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

“I’m beginning to glimpse what it means to be human, to hold my scars lightly and hold hope tightly.”

Talented author Heidi Chiavaroli has penned a beautiful story of forgiveness, healing, and hope in her book The Way Back. Set on the coast of Maine in two different time periods, it features two women. One is based on Abbie Burgess, a real-life lighthouse keeper who lived in the 1800s. The other is fictional Laney Jacobs who has physical and mental scars and comes to Maine to find a grandmother she has never met. Her tenuous relationship with her mother has deteriorated, and she seeks to know her grandmother who has sent her inspirational birthday cards every year.

The main characters are realistically flawed, engaging, and multi-layered, and I enjoyed seeing their growth as the story progressed. The author has seamlessly incorporated faith elements to add inspiration and depth. I liked the strong message of healing and hope as well as the importance of family. Chiavaroli has chosen to tackle hard subjects with this book, but she has done so with sensitivity and melded them with spiritual growth.

“I only found healing when I found forgiveness.”
“Hope is a powerful thing, for good—and for ill.”
“There will always be a part of me that hurts. But I have to choose to move forward each day, to believe God is not finished with me, that the best is yet to come.”

I found this book to be fascinating, especially since we recently visited Bar Harbor, Maine, where the contemporary portion of the book is set. Therefore, it was easy to envision the area, which added to my enjoyment of it. I would recommend it to those who enjoy beautiful stories with deep inspirational messages. 4.5 stars

Can you be motivated, inspired to change through the life of a historical figure?

When it’s hard to get passed something that happened in your life…something you feel like was your fault…how do you move on from it? This story provides insights into self harm as a way of dealing with very difficult feelings, painful memories or overwhelming situations and experiences.

The Way Back is an endearing story with a historical lighthouse heroine, a FMC trying to escape from the clutches of her past and a hero that you will adore. Those who love clean women’s fiction with a subtle and perfectly interposed spiritual thread and a true historical heroine meshed within, will love journeying with Laney on The Way Back from her past.

I must also add that I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook narration by the author. Her delivery brought distinct character voices to the table and the dialog was easy to follow. Although, I think that my favorite aspect of the audiobook was the author’s passion for this story. I could sense it in her voice.

Hard topic- self harm as an outlet for emotional pain (post healing)

This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review. I also purchased the ebook and audiobook.

I have read several deeper novels lately and this is one of them. The Way Back deals with some heavier subject matter as three generations of women come to terms with varying traumas in their lives and a voice from the past gives guidance in her story.

Each chapter starts with a quote of some sort from various characters which adds a unique touch to this narrative. I felt a blanket of sadness surround me as I started this novel, especially when you read the story that this story is anchored to, but there is also this whisper of hope that is also equally present. It is breathtaking in its presentation and masterfully shows off the author’s talent for evoking such deep emotions.

When I first started reading, I was invested but then it started to drag a bit in the middle. I think this is because the romantic aspect was not that appealing to me, and I feel like it could’ve been better if it would’ve stayed focused on the three women and Abbie’s story, and left the romance out, but that’s just me.

I adored that Abbie’s story didn’t feel like a typical dual timeline and more of a story within a story, and the mystery that surrounds each diary entry increased my hunger for answers, not only for the author but for Laney as well. I identified with Laney’s pain so much, having struggled in my past with the same harmful coping mechanism that she did. Yes, self-harm is present in this novel and while it could be triggering to read, I think a lot of people who have had the same struggles will see themselves and maybe find hope from the books message. I know I did.

Though the truths revealed were what I had assumed, the ending was satisfying. It ends on a happier note and shows what the strength and love of family can do, all in the shadow of a lighthouse.

*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
