I like this book for various reasons. One reason I like this book is the writing. The author wrote this book in present tense, making the story more entertaining and engaging for the readers. For example, when discussing Jefferson’s actions, the author states, “Jefferson rings the servants’ bell with a lever located next to the fireplace.” This sentence produces much imagery in the readers due to the present-tense writing, making it more interesting for them. The author also says that “Jefferson puts on his reading spectacles and sits down at his custom-made writing table, complete with a rotating chair, which he can move from side to side as he works.” This sentence also provides imagery in readers’ minds when it describes Jefferson’s current actions in present tense. Both sentences present a movie-like image in the readers’ heads due to the present tense writing, making the story engaging and entertaining for the readers.

In addition, I like the illustrations in this book. The illustrations are detailed and realistic-looking, making the illustrations become real and interesting for the readers. For example, the illustrations provide shadow effects to give off a more realistic effect. Also, the illustrations are clear and well-drawn to make Jefferson and other characters look like real people. Both examples allow the illustrator to create a more realistic effect for the readers, adding on to the imagination of the story. The main idea of this story is that Thomas Jefferson was a very important historical figure and did many great things as a leader.

3rd grade studies Thomas Jefferson and his summer home is in my hometown. I would use this book to read before our field trip because many of his inventions are housed at Poplar Forest.
