Pequena biografia
Linda Castillo is originally from rural Ohio, USA, but she lives in Texas with her husband. In her spare time Linda enjoys riding horses, especially trail riding, and dabbles in barrel racing. She resides in Texas with her husband, three dogs, a barn cat, and two Appaloosa horses.

Linda knew from an early age that she wanted to be a writer—and penned her first novel at the early age of thirteen. Her first novel was published in 2000. The bestselling author of many novels, she is the recipient of numerous industry awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence, the Holt Medallion, the Golden Heart, and a nomination for the prestigious RITA. But is best known for her Amish thriller series focused around protagonist Kate Burkholder, the first novel of the series "Sworn to Silence" be made into a two-hour original movie starring Neve Campbell as Kate Burkholder.

The Burning by Linda Castillo is an intriguing story. The characters are developed and realistic. Kate Burkholder is now happily married to John. Her latest case is a dark and gruesome one (the details are quite graphic). This case hits close to home for Kate when her brother ends up one of the prime suspects. Trying to get answers out of the Amish is like pulling a wisdom tooth (tough and painful). Kate should see if the local hospital has a frequent visitor program because someone is determined to sideline her. I was surprised that case details were repeated so often. The case leads to a suspenseful reveal. The Burning can be read as a standalone. I believe it would be helpful, though, to read Sworn to Silence (the first book in the series) which would give you an introduction to the characters (or watch An Amish Murder). The story does contain some “salty” language. John and Kate had an interesting conversation at the end. I will be curious to see what becomes of it. The Burning took me on a roller coaster (Kate too and she has the bruises to prove it) and I am looking forward to Kate’s next adventure.… (mais)

When you begin a story with a victim burned at the stake, you better deliver. But would you expect less from tough-minded Painter’s Mill Chief of Police Kate Burkholder, and gifted storyteller Linda Castillo? What follows that gruesome beginning is a gripping story with echoes back to the creation of the Anabaptist movement and the cruel treatment they endured during the middle ages. The victim, Milan Swanz, an excommunicated Amish man, has lived a life of antagonism, for everyone and everything, creating an enemy’s list that possesses no end, including Kate's brother Joseph. Kate assembles her crew, as well as her now husband and Ohio Bureau of Investigation investigator John Tomasetti, and attempts to uncover the who and why of Swanz’s murder. Accused of protecting her brother, and removed from involvement in the case, an undeterred Kate continues her investigation, a pathway that leads her into several dramatic life and death conflicts. From the disturbing opening scene to the explosive ending, this is a book you will not put down. This series continues to roll along at breakneck speed.

The Burning by Linda Castillo
Kate Burkholder series #16. Cop procedural thriller, mystery. Can be read as a stand-alone but characters lives and situations flow in a continual fashion throughout the series.
Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call about a suspicious fire in the woods. An Amish man has been burned at the stake and Kate does the bulk of the investigation because of her ties to that community. When her brother becomes a suspect by other officials, they order Kate off the investigation. But too late, as the killers already have Kate in the sights and know she needs to be stopped before she finds too many answers. Kate is not one to give up. She’s going to protect and serve with her last breath if it comes to that. And it just might.

🎧 I alternated between an ebook and an audiobook copy of this story. The audiobook is performed by Kathleen McInerney. The performance is done well with distinct voices for the main characters. Since it’s Kate’s POV alone, the majority is her investigating and taking the reader along for the ride. At one point, Kate herself is attacked and held at gunpoint. That scene alone is why audiobooks are so popular. The reader is in the exact same position of frustration, and anger and fear of that gun going off.

This is an audiobook you will need to keep at 1.25 speed at the fastest. Anything higher, makes the voices sound digital and not alive. The narrator uses a lot of pauses and subtle variations in the performance that are lost at higher speeds. Especially during the autopsy analysis with doctor Coblentz and the department assistant, as well as passages of Kate describing scenes or giving background information. I tried several different speeds and feel the best performance is at 1.25.
For a veteran and lover of audiobooks, if you prefer a higher speed for playback, I suggest reading, rather than listening to this one.

Suspenseful, history filled and pulse-pounding.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and publisher Macmillan Audio.

An Amish man is driving home one night when his buggy horse gets spooked by something. The buggy is caught between two trees, and when the man tries to free it, something attacks him. It’s a large beast, but he can’t get a good look at it because of the foggy weather and the fact that he was attacked from the back. He manages to escape, though his leg has been badly bitten. But this is not the only attack this night, and until Kate can get an identity on this beast, she doesn’t know what she is dealing with. This novella is quite exciting. The enemy is different from the normal bad guys that Kate chases down, but it is just as deadly in its own way. Linda Castillo in a few short pages has set a gothic, foggy scene, described a deadly beast without giving too much away until the end, put innocent people in the beast’s path, and then concluded with a satisfying end. Well done!… (mais)
