Conhecimento Comum

One would think going back and forth between black/white and color would be jarring. One would be right! But it's jarring in a good way; it helps highlight moments of great beauty and horror.

The story and characters were engaging, but the ending didn't click with me entirely. It felt as if a greater mystery was just below the surface, but that depth is (likely on purpose) a bit misleading. I may just need to sit with it. The main character isn't really anyone special, and that makes her monologues and daydreams all the more interesting, actually. Her thoughts and dreams are poetic and warm, but her life is drab and cold. That dichotomy is present throughout the book in both Carroll's writing and art.

Another thing that grabbed me was Carroll's lettering. The length and positioning of word balloons often does tonal work to depict the isolation, passion, or restrained anger in a character's voice. It's extremely effective and some of the best lettering I've seen in a long time.

Overall, I quite liked the book. While the end left me a little cold, I was impressed by the work put into every aspect of A Guest in the House. It's the most gorgeous work that Emily Carroll has put out, and I want to keep staring at the pages for a while.

A clever story -- more than a little inspired by Rebecca -- married with Emily Carroll's twisted gothic sensibility and beautiful art. Despite its inspiration, I did not see a lot of the plot developments coming.

If you're going to turn a contemporary classic into a graphic novel, this is the way to proceed. Like a good movie adaptation, this book retells & reimagines the story for the form, rather than just cutting and pasting. Powerful, heartbreaking, and beautifully illustrated.

Not bad at all. The characters were good fun and fairly clever. The art had some interesting bits, especially where Baba Yaga was concerned. The dad is an unmitigated jerk, and there wasn't really any resolution in that regard. Also, I was a little bothered by Masha's look. She read more as mid-twenties than teen.
