BLOW ME AWAY, MY GOD! And now I need to give Macbeth a re-read. Holy hell. I will 100% be using this with students, there are so many interesting ways to do it!!!

Recommended: YES
For those who are not faint of heart, for an incredible parallel to Macbeth that still retains it's own integrity, for darkness and viciousness in many forms, for complexities of vengeance and fate and evil

Thoughts:
I'd been avoiding this book. Frankly, I was judging it by the cover, because tbh the bight bold colors and Chiller-esque font made it seem really unimpressive and childish to me. Then I finally read the description, which included a trigger warning that it dealt with rape and the emotional consequences. I didn't realize it had such a dark side, and that's actually what drew me in. I didn't realize it would actually be such a parallel to Macbeth until I was a chapter in and meeting our wide crew of characters.

The language: vague yet beautiful. It's almost poetic, which is a nice match to the story (play) it's inspired by. Sometimes you're not sure what's real and what's figurative, and that uncertainty works so well with the story to make it hard to trust your narrator. It's a very powerful technique, and draws the story down so deep.

The ending: I wasn't sure how that would play out, and oh my god. Just.... oh my god. ♥

Thanks to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Not the best. Maybe if I hadn't known the "twist" from page one it would've had more punch? It seemed so obvious that I'm not sure it was actually meant to be a twist, but just in case it is, I'll stay quiet.

The last quarter gets very disjointed and reads like a stream of consciousness across time jumps. It's not too hard to follow, but it wasn't very interesting to me either. Capin has a strong style of writing, and whole I generally love it, this ended up getting repetitive. Sure, that was partially the point, but it made me want to hurry up the ending so I'd be done with it.

I didn't really care about any of the characters either. There was a revelation that made me dislike Mar (see spoiler below) and since we only see the others through her hazy mind, it's hard to really connect to any of them.

There were two plot points I was surprised by, but they were more of details within the larger story. Ultimately I'd say you can probably skip this one. Stick with Foul is Fair / Golden Boys Beware by her.

Also a personal issue, but the seeing of a military summer camp was weird AF to me. I kept getting distracted by the things I didn't understand or just by how weird it was that people would choose to go there and do that stuff. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I mean, it's super obvious that she's dead, right? She literally starts it by saying "I'm alive" which call me paranoid but I was suspicious immediately. It didn't feel like a normal exultant declaration. The real clincher was like page two where it says Flora was the first girl to arrive. If Margaret is narrating from nearby, Flora would be the second. Anyway, maybe my unreliable narrators class has made me naturally suspicious. 🤣

The pregnancy and the actual way Jack kills Mar were a surprise. Rat poison? Seriously? I know Mar sees the good in people but girl what the fuck made you think that made sense? She's 17 or 18 so I guess the explanation is that her mental state was really fucked up from her distress over the baby and the boy. I don't know, but it made me like Mar less because that's really fucking stupid.

A reread. While I loved all of the references to MACBETH, it was sometimes difficult to take the journey with the hero in this novel. Why? Well, the hero is a sociopath for one, and even though she‘s justified in what she does, it makes for a blood-gripping ride. I couldn‘t put it down, but I didn‘t walk away with any human-condition idea to make me a better person. Reading it felt like being on a 100-mile-an-hour rollercoaster. Then, once you get off, your whole body is wobbly; you stumble over to the trash can, throw up, then want to do it again. Maybe. #aahliterature… (mais)

A unique and different type of book because of the writing style especially, but also because of the story and the perspective we get. I'm much like some of the others who have read and reviewed this in that the writing style threw me off a bit and had me feeling a bit off while trying to follow this style of writing. It was somewhat challenging to focus and follow things for the first quarter to the first half of the book, but then it started to smooth out and flow better as well as make it easier for me to follow.
This is a story about a girl who was in love with a boy and like always they found themselves in an unhappy situation after declaring their love for each other and then things happened from there. It's about a girl and her 3 friends who always come back to a special summer camp each year at the Marshall Naval School. At this camp, they are there for each other always and it's their safe place away from the world until one summer when girls are missing and a boy is dead. Margaret's friends disappear into the lies she tells about what happened with her and the boy she loved.
In this narrative, we follow as Margaret unravels the secrets of this summer and last summer to figure out and shed light on what happened. It's hard to tell too much about this story without giving things away because really the best way to read this is to go into it blind. The best thing to know is that if you're not used to this style of writing and haven't read anything by this author or like this, you might have a bit of a hard time at first, but if you get past the initial adjustment and disjointed narrative, it gets better. By the end of the story, I was left thinking a lot for a while on various topics and wishing that some things in life weren't so unfair. It also lead me into deep thinking and things that I haven't thought of for a while that caused me to reflect on life and death and the different states of being and how time works in different places and times of being. If you're looking for an intriguing mystery with some lyrical/prose writing that may lead you to deep thoughts then make sure you check this one out.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press/Wednesday Books for letting me read and review this one-of-a-kind read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
