Michael L. Burgoyne is a Major in the United States Army and co-author of The Defense of Jisr al-Doreaa, a tactical primer on counterinsurgency modeled after the military classic, The Defense of Duffer's Drift. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 where he served in al-Anbar province, Iraq. In 2005 he was deployed for a second time, where he commanded C Troop, Third Squadron, Seventh U.S. Cavalry and conducted hundreds of missions across Iraq from Al Qiam to Southeast Baghdad, including the execution of the Iraqi Constitutional Referendum and the first Iraqi Parliamentary Election. He has also served as an instructor at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA.


Michael Burgoyne graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor in May 1999.
While posted to Fort Carson, CO, he served as a Tank Platoon Leader, Scout Platoon Leader and Cavalry Troop Executive Officer in the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment.

He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Squadron Logistics Officer in 2003 providing logistical support across 14,000 square kilometers of contested terrain in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. In 2005 Burgoyne was deployed for a second time, where he commanded C Troop, Third Squadron, Seventh U.S. Cavalry and conducted hundreds of missions across Iraq from Al Qiam to Southeast Baghdad, including the execution of the Iraqi Constitutional Referendum and the first Iraqi Parliamentary Election.

Burgoyne also served as a Troop/Company Trainer at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California where he was responsible for the teaching, training, and mentoring of deploying units in the fundamentals of combat operations and counter insurgency tactics, techniques, and procedures.
