Clare Briggs was a one-panel cartoonist at the New York Tribune from 1914 until his death in 1930. These fine panels are from that period, when he drew a series of observations on the human condition called by different titles, depending upon what aspect of humanity he was examining. So, a small boy being forced to be a clothing dummy for his mother while she notes alterations for his sister's dresses (in front of the living room window, no less) was titled "When a Feller Needs a Friend". Other categories are "Ain't It a Grand and Glorious Feelin'?", "Somebody's Always Taking the Joy Out of Life", "The Days of Real Sport", "That Guiltiest Feeling", and so on. A few are dated, but most are timeless looks at the comic foibles of plain folks, and are just as true and humorous today.… (mais)
