3.5, rounded up to 4. Part travel guide (that's already outdated, alas as I checked a couple URLs that no longer work, though the restaurant still seems open... then again that's kind of the nature of guides), part collection of Tony's quotes from his various shows and interviews of the years.

My main takeaway is that Bourdain enjoyed fine hotels that I've never dreamed of staying at (but hey, maybe future goals?) and he had a lyrical way with words. I think I would've appreciated something more akin to the Last Chance to See revival where places that changed/moved are noted (and they are, to a degree).… (mais)

An entertaining romp. A future world where foodieism is the dominant cultural force, and restaurateurs rule LA society like crime bosses. One man stands against them, a solitary practitioner of the art of sushi. The plot is flimsy at best, seemingly set up purely to allow Bourdain to take a few potshots at current foodie trends (the two baddies are a haute cuisine purist and a compromised locavore dogmatic). The art is beautiful, though the actual comics don't always work, and Jose Villarubia's colouring lends the whole enterprise a respectability it doesn't quite deserve.

Lurking inside this is a good story and comic, but it would have taken a lot more care and time to draw it out. Fine as a distracting little romp, but not one for the shelves.

Bourdain was Bourdain even before everyone knew him. His voice is so clear and his world view seems to have developed but not changed with the years. Noir from the mob goon's perspective can fail 100 ways but Bourdain creates a fun anti-hero in Bobby. The dame in this book is an idiot with impulse control issues, and she had potential to be an interesting character. That was a shame. Filled with sex and money and food and travel this novella is funny and really enjoyable. Listened to this for a commute plus a morning getting ready when I needed a break from the gutting nonfiction book I am reading (We Were Once a Family) and it was a solid 3.5. The reader was excellent.… (mais)

Really looking forward to making few more recipes from here. I made the tomato salad for a friend lunch and everyone loved it. I'm lucky to grow tomatoes so that worked out well. I'm looking forward to making the meatloaf and the chili!
