Phillis Wheatley: Young Revolutionary Poet is about the life of a young African-American slave girl name Phillis. It tells of the struggles that Africans and African-Americans went through during that period of time. It tells of her being sold into slavery. The book also tells of the how the war forced people who were friends to become enemies. Phillis is an intelligent and bright young girl. She learns English very quickly and loves to read. She also learns Latin and developes a passion for poetry, which rises to everlasting fame.
I enjoyed this book, because it showed someone overcoming obstacles. It had a happy ending.
This book can be used to talk about people in black history, read during poetry week, have the students write a piece of poetry similar to Phillis Wheatley.
