Isabella's mum buys a farm in the Riverina and moves the entire family there despite knowing nothing about orange growing. Damaska has just moved from another war-torn country to the same area to start a better life although her grandmother and father seem determined to stick to the old customs and marry her off at sixteen. Isabella's brother Abel is an Australian soldier and comes home on leave to the new farmhouse. He meets Damaska because Isabella's mum has been tutoring the family in English and the family have been helping with the harvest in return. But there are people in the town who don't like the new residents (both Damaska and Isabella's families) - graffiti /insults/ even pig's heads on farm property and things come to a head when Abel stands up for Damaska and the local "guys" take issue and kidnap him....
Nice, thought provoking Australian novel for older readers.

Set in the 1820’s, in the penal colony of Newcastle. This beautiful book follows Emma Colchester as she arrives in Australia to marry a man she has never met. Sharing this journey with Emma is Tobias Freeman a convict in the colony who longs for freedom. One criminal. One free settler. Both prisoners?
I found this to be a beautiful, thoughtful book. Blackmore has a beautiful writing style, with great descriptions and complexe characters. I found it hard to put this book down.
The author did an amazing job of capturing family dynamics, these relationships came across as both realistic and well rounded. With a captivating mix of historical fiction, romance and three dimensional characters this book has more than enough substance to keep a reader engaged.
A few errors do pop up throughout this book. There are some missing words and some issues with paragraphing. Yet for me the story was compelling enough that these issues didn’t really bother me.
This books only downfall in my eyes was the end. I would’ve liked a little bit more. Maybe an epilogue to round up some of the characters stories. I understand that’s these were minor characters and the idea is just to let the reader imagine how these characters ended up, but I don’t have an imagination.
So my only criticism of this book is I wanted more. In my eyes that a win. If you love historical fiction or romance or just a really good read, grab this book.

This story is set in the Newcastle region of New South Wales, Australia in the 1820s, and has interesting historical information about life in that time and place, not only in regard to convicts but also about the life of military personnel and the privileged immigrants. History enthusiasts and those with family connections in this area of the colony will find this story intriguing. Blackmore has done her research well and weaves the historical aspects through the story with flair and attention to detail.
This is above all a love story and the characters of Emma and Tobias are very engaging. As a reader I was easily drawn into Emma’s dilemma in being betrothed to a man she does not love, and her growing feelings for a man her society would deem unsuitable. Her conflict involves not only her emotions but also her faith, and this struggle is woven through the story with sensitivity. Her influence on those around her in regard to faith is realistically portrayed and gives a sense of a light in a dark place. Gideon Quinn is a thoroughly dislikable character, and well written so that the conclusion of the story is satisfying. Readers who enjoy a touching and exciting romance will love Blackmore’s debut novel and be looking for the next, I’m sure.
I was a little distracted by quite a few errors in paragraphing of dialogue and by missing or added small words in the text. This did not take away from the enjoyment of the story but did remind me how easily these things can be overlooked and how important that extra edit is.
Overall this is a story set in a fascinating time and place, with engaging characters, who have challenging life issues to deal with. It highlights the power of love and also the importance of faithfulness and integrity despite tragedy and hardship.
