I received this book through The Knights of the Round Table ARR Group for an honest review, thank you.

Mia Taylor is a senior in high school who lives with her father and her dog Biscuit. Mia has a brother who’s gone missing for the last two years and two best friends named Em and Austin. Austin has a crush on Mia and that factors into the story.

While photographing wildlife for a science project, Mia finds images of two strange men on her father’s property. Later she comes face to face with Regulus and Arizona, two ‘Enforcers’ for the IIA. From this point on the adventures begin and I didn’t want to put the book down. The author sets up a good pace throughout the book and I don’t remember any place in particular where it slowed except maybe at the beginning, but that didn’t last for long.

This story is told in first person through Mia’s eyes, and one brief chapter in third person through Regulus’ eyes. I can usually tell if the author will do a good job with first person within the first few pages, and the author did. Usually I don’t like first person because the character comes out flat and boring, but I was immediately sucked into Mia’s personality and was able to get a handle on her moods and behavior from the beginning. I liked that Mia was a teenager, but not a whiny teenager. She appeared to be more of a tomboy than a girly-girl like her friend Em. I liked that Mia was a curious person and wasn’t afraid to ask questions, although I think she should have pushed more in getting answers especially if the IIA needed her help.

I wish there was more description of the physical appearances of the other characters. I don’t feel like I really have a good image in my mind of what they look like, not even of Mia herself. I have the personalities, but no physical images.

The revelation of secrets was well-spaced out throughout the book and the admittance to Mia’s friends of what was happening was also well timed. I would have like to know more about this mysterious IIA. I think that Mia needs to be asking more questions about them since by the end of the book she is now working for them. But I think she is still a bit naïve about the possible goodness of the IIA. Somehow I don’t trust the organization.

I read this story on my NOOK and there were some formatting issues. Sometimes there would be one sentence on one page and the rest of the page was left blank. This happened quite frequently. Other times, two characters would speak in the same paragraph when they should have been separated.

Last thing to mention is the cover. It’s very attractive with just the right amount of mystery. I like the colors, the fonts and font sizes chosen. The title and author’s name are well placed. The cover attracts the eye and would get me interested in checking out the book.

This was an enjoyable, fast-paced read and I would read the following books in the series. The Waiting Booth is well suited for the YA audience. I give this book 4 stars.

Lore is a collection of six short stories that re-imagines folktales and mythology from around the world and places interesting and romantic twists into each. Written by six different authors, each story has a unique feeling and setting.

Shimmer takes the mermaid tale and gives it a fresh spin with Draven and Coral. Draven is spending the summer at his father's cottage after a heartbreak when he sees Coral alone at night, seemingly drowning herself. Draven is compelled to help Coral, but she may not need it. I really enjoyed these characters for the short time that we know them as well as the modernized mermaid mythology. I did think it wrapped up a little too quickly, but that is the nature of short stories.

Between is a modern story of the Arabic djinn brought to a modern high school. Lucy and Natasha have made peace with their bodies and have found love with each other at fat camp this summer. When Lucy returns home skinny, everything changes. She is finally accepted into the popular group, the Royals. However, being a lesbian does not fit their mold. This one made it difficult to like any of the characters, but there was growth even within the confines of the short story. I enjoyed the arc of the djinn the most and that Lucy and Sienna were able to realize that love wins over popularity.

Sunset Moon incorporates lore from the Blackfeet Native American mythology in order to reawaken a troubled teen. Eloise takes the rap for her boyfriend and now has one strike too many, it's either jail time or nine months at a juvenile work home. While there, Eloise is forced to learn about her heritage and meets Ven. Ven is bound to help Eloise through the darkness, but she must accept the light. I really liked learning about the dreamcatcher lore as well as watching Eloise find hope in her life. This is one that I would have loved to see develop into a longer story.

The Jewish Golem and Frankenstein's monster are combined in The Maker. After Brett is left with a traumatic brain injury, courtesy of his now ex-girlfriend Cassandra, his life is changed forever and he is bent on revenge. Unable to get out and about much by himself, Brett unearths his family's hidden manuscripts and makes a creature that will be sure to seduce Cassandra and humiliate her. The Maker is definitely the creepiest story of the bunch, but also the most surprising. The Golem is the best character of this story.

A Beautiful Morning was one of my favorite stories, a tale of the Mayan sun god Kinish and flower goddess Ishel. Their love for one another made perfect sense, but was forbidden. This was a sweet romance that incorporated the destructive nature of some of the other Mayan gods that may have led to the downfall of the civilization. I really enjoyed these characters and the glimpse into the complicated lives of the Mayan deities.

The Barricades turned out to be another favorite of mine even though the premise seemed really strange to me. Set in the future on another world, the Fae and humans have escaped a dying Earth. They were set to live as equals, but the Ethernal Fae's powers have placed the above the humans in every way. When the dying Eternal prince Daniel is found within the human area, a very caring human girl, Casey risks everything to save his life. This was a very sweet and action packed story laced with magic, greed and romance. A lot of development was packed into this short story that made it seem like much more.

According to me a Prologue or the 1st Chapter of a book is THE reflection - SO it must capture my attention from page 1 I will continue a few more chapters to give the Book a fair chance to change my mind!

Review!

Chapter 1

OKAY I must say I can do review on the first chapter only WOW what a first chapter!

Colin –

Call me the king of precaution. I’ve always taken meticulous care with my relationships, my work-even the mundane tasks.

But precautions are like vitamins.

You can take them all you want, and you still might get the bird flu.

Of course, precaution doesn’t matter when a car hits me from behind and delivers a morning cocktail of chaos and crunching metal.

When I make it to the car behind me, I’m not a bit surprised to discover it’s a woman.

The blond chick stares through the glass, her clear blue eyes wary.

“Are you okay?” I grab the door handle to find it’s locked.

Lol – that Bird Flu sentence sold this book for me!

I see a woman on the side of the road.

A person walking unusual sight this far from the city. My brain clicks with a recognition that ignites my dormant temper.

I drive past her and gawk. It’s the driver from the morning. She got a hitchhikers thumb out.

I wonder if she’ll turn and make a run for it when she realizes it’s me. She’s still walking her head slightly turned down as if she’s watching her feet. Five, four, three, two… and she lifts her head. Her stride falters.

O step out of the car and wait, arms folded, as she stares at me.

“Well, we meet again.”

Type of Characters and my choices according to pictures :

Veronica – trust issues but a strong female lead character

Colin Cordova, a reliable character, taking care of what is his! A rich guy with a tattoo *yum-wink* and my hero and new bb!

Chapter Development

Veronica – running – a past she wants to forget about! Then she meets Colin I think every lady must meet a Colin when in dire straits.

He is like the super hero type and oh man I loved him from chapter 1

Almost Paradise - Mike Reno & Ann Wilson

I can’t wait to find this homeless shelter and let him get on with his day. He’s a nice guy… a little bizarre with the crumbs comment, but we all have our quirks. He’d be wise to get rid of me and my trouble fast. My eye twitches at the thought.

I am huge crumb.

But the hero that Collin is, he lets Veronica stay over his place with his other two roommates. The one night turns and Veronica is staying longer than planned with Collin, and amazingly he wants her stay.

I couldn’t stop reading I needed to know Veronica's next move and it was not slow passed it moved pretty quickly, and the poor girl has so much that she has to hide – my heart broke for her in portions of this novel!

Relationship development

From chapter Collin is attracted to Veronica – angry but still attracted to her. Collin has to put in lots of effort that Veronica opens up to him, and he tries to make her see she can be his friend and he will be her friend in return.

The attraction is mutual between both parties, but Veronicas secrets make it difficult to trust and love.

Collin had a bad breakup with is ex cheating fiance – so this makes trusting new love for him difficult.
