An amazing volume... how often do you get a voice from 350 years ago, telling tales about historic figures and events as an eye-witness! The author, a physician to the nobles of the Mogul establishment, has keen insights into the personalities of the contenders to the Mogul throne and their political environment- so that the fratricidial actions of Aurangazeb do not appear so extreme after all. Also enlightening are his comments on the superstitions and hypocricies of the people of faith, specially his discussion of widow burning and spiritual extremists. One sees a substantially modern, enlightenment, personality in all this, making the times come alive for us.… (mais)
