I found the story to be very interesting, especially when Axel Sköld started to dig and found links to the death of King Gustav III back in the 18-century.

The Eighteen is a thrilling book and I have to admit that the ending truly surprised me. I did not expect the book to end that way, but I really liked it. Now I want a sequel!

Der Journalist Axel Sköld hat bei seinen Recherchen etwas Ungewöhnliches herausgefunden. Er vermutet, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Mord an Olof Palme und zwei anderen Morden gibt. Nachdem er seiner Chefin seinen Verdacht mitteilt, wird er schnell ausgebremst. Doch der Widerstand sorgt dafür, dass er weitergräbt. Eine Spur bringt ihn weit in die Vergangenheit zu einem Königsmord und er vermutet, dass ein geheimer Club schon lange maßgeblich seine Finger in Politik und Wirtschaft hat und dabei sehr skrupellos vorgeht. Da er nicht lockerlässt, schwebt er schon bald in Lebensgefahr.
Obwohl sich der Schreibstil gut lesen lässt und dieses Buch spannend und fesselnd ist, habe ich ein bisschen gebraucht, um mich in die Geschichte hineinzufinden. Es lag vielleicht daran, dass anfangs nicht so viel passierte. Doch dann konnte ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen.
Die Charaktere sind gut und vielschichtig dargestellt. Es gibt „Gute“ und „Böse“ und nicht immer weiß ganz genau, woran man mit den Personen ist. Ehrgeiz und Machtstreben sind manchmal wichtiger als Integrität. Axel Sköld ist ein Vollblutjournalist, der sobald er eine Spur hat, nicht mehr lockerlässt, selbst wenn man ihm Steine in den Weg legt oder es gefährlich wird. Unterstützt wird er dabei von seiner besten Freundin und Kollegin Stina, die mir sehr sympathisch war. Für sie ist es nicht leicht, ihrem Sohn David gerecht zu werden, denn er hat einen Hirnschaden und braucht besondere Zuwendung. Axels Gegenspieler sind mächtig und skrupellos und der Auftragsmörder Eugene de Kock taucht auch immer wieder auf. Manchmal erschien mir Axel aber auch ein wenig naiv, wenn er die recht offensichtliche Gefahr nicht wirklich sah. Die Finanzministerin Lova lässt Axel zwar Hinweise zukommen, aber dennoch wusste ich nie, woran ich wirklich mit ihr bin. Toll fand ich den kolossalen Geschichtsprofessor Vilhelm Skrak.
Nach einem Anfang mit eher unterschwelliger Spannung wurde es zunehmend bedrohlicher und spannend. Am Ende gab es dann zwar einen dramatischen Showdown, aber mir kam das Ende etwas zu abrupt und auch nicht alle Fragen sind beantwortet. Dennoch hat es Spaß gemacht, diesen Polit-Thriller zu lesen.… (mais)
